COSMETIC FILLERS

The recent passing of an Estée Lauder executive has understandably raised questions about the safety of cosmetic fillers.

After decades of performing injectable treatments, I want to address a question many patients have asked me: whether facial filler can cause a pulmonary (lung) embolism.

Here’s what we know: there are no reported cases of cosmetic facial filler directly causing a pulmonary embolism. There have, however, been two reported cases associated with hyaluronic acid filler injected into the vaginal area.

The takeaway isn’t to fear filler, but to be thoughtful about who performs your treatment. Cosmetic injectables are a medical treatment and require an in-depth understanding of anatomy, meticulous technique, and the ability to recognize and manage complications should they occur.

If you’re considering filler, choose an experienced, board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, ask questions, and ensure you prioritize your health and safety.
